23andme is a wake-up call to data sovereignty

In all likelihood, The move Through the SEI Foundation-the organization behind Layer1 Blockchain Sei-to buy bankrupt genetic data company 23andme is a long shot at the best, and potential a publicity only. However, it remains an inconvenient -an exciting idea that many people are thinking.
If such a deal to pass by, we will find a web3 company that saves a web2 company, which will have massive ramifications and itself. Web2 giant techs have been challenged in the AI area of smaller, agile, and more flexible companies. However, buying what used to be one of the best stars of the Silicon Valley of a blockchain upstart would be a total parking shift.
Furthermore, a deal will be a win for public understanding for data security and privacy. As we all know how meta, Google, Apple, etc.
Then probably never became such a case as 23andme, holding DNA and other data for 15 million people. It shows the public how weak their most personal and intimate data is in the hands of centralized companies and organizations.
This is something when Facebook and Instagram monitor our shopping and consumer habits and make our sensitive messages and emails vulnerable to leaks. At 23andme, we talk about DNA data; The very fabric of our human bodies is only green on the highest bidder.
If SEI is unsuccessful, which is likely, this data can and can be sold to health or life insurance companies. They can use this data to potentially exclude people from important health care policies or insurance, thanks to the ultimate way in which the US healthcare system is operated on and implemented discrimination policies.
Perhaps, in the end, this is a point of which the public can seriously understand the importance of owning their own data. Perhaps more people will realize that in order to keep their data really safe, they have full control of themselves by using decentralized blockchain technology.
Of course, not all blockchain is created equal. However, SEI certainly claims to be extremely safe, and projects like Arweave – which are a permanent storage chain developed in a model “pay a store forever” – there are applications that can allow you to upload and store your data private, safe and permanently.
It’s two on a growing list of options in our industry, but the point is this: there is no simple centralized solution beyond a piece of paper stored in a Swiss security deposit box with keys buried deeply on the ground that can be compared. And even then, someone can dig the keys.
It is a moment of water for people to understand the importance of self -esteem. And it came at a time when the confidence in centralized organizations, companies, and even governments were falling. As such, the 23andMe sale can mark a real point of history, and one that can revise how web3 is visible, understood and used.
