Why does SEI want to cut cosmos compatibility and go all to Ethereum

A SEI network developer suggested to reduce blockchain cosmos support Wednesday to a bid to remove “unnecessary” complexity for users.
The proposal, if successful, will do so so that SEI users can only ship and receive Ethereum -compatible transactions.
Cutting cosmos support will significantly simplify the blockchain, reduce infrastructure overhead, and SEI’s position will be stronger within the wider Ethereum ecosystem, Philip Su, SEI Labs’ Engineering lead, Says In the proposal.
“This move will lead to greater adoption, improved developer experiences, and a more cohesive community,” he said.
The move will come as the blockchain infrastructure builders compete to draw on the developers and expand their orbits.
Ethereum -based infrastructure, which runs on software called the Ethereum Virtual Machine, or EVM, is what most decentralized financial apps are running. The Ethereum, as well as other large blockchains such as the Coinbase base and the BNB -related chain, all uses EVM.
But there are challenges. Solana uses its own software called the Solana Virtual Machine, or SVM, while Cosmos has a pioneer software called Cosmwasm.
SEI is currently supporting both EVM and Cosmwasm. “While these dual architecture has provided flexibility, it also introduces significant complexity and strife for both users and developers,” Su said.
If Sei Pivots are far from Kosmwasm it can be a significant blow for software adoption.
The SEI network has continued to grow since the launch of 2023. Deposits in the Defi Apps on the network are at all-time high $ 1 billion, according to Defillama DataIt makes the 15 -largest blockchain by the total amount locked.
The Cosmos Hub, the leading development platform for Cosmos, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Not necessarily overhead
When SEI launches it is not supported by EVM and the adoption is slow.
In the first year of the blockchain only attracts about $ 50 million of deposits to its defi apps, a deadly total compared to other blockchains launched at the same time, such as the SUI, which has increased above $ 600 million in its first year’s deposits.
But this changed in July 2024 when SEI launched its second version, letting users create DeFI apps using either COSMWASM or the EVM.
The activity exploded as developers and investors filed a blockchain. Among the defer Defers, EVM is the most prominent software. So by introducing EVM support, SEI has tapped a larger pool of developers.

New sei users now prefer to use EVM instead of kosmwasm, Data SEI Labs combined with data platform dune analytics shows.
What’s more, the current cross-compatibility came at a cost, Su said. It introduces the “unnecessary overhead in codebase and complicates the test and trial,” he said.
However, no one else in the SEI community guarantees to feel the same way.
Build along with SEI, a group managed by nonprofit sei foundation, is host A call on May 14 to discuss in detail the proposal and provide opportunities for developers and communities to ask questions and comment.
