Former senator who calls bitcoin ‘a choice for criminals’ gets 11 years in prison for bribe
Crypto is in doubt and humiliating former US senator Bob Menendez has been punished 11 years in prison on Wednesday for bribery charges and acting as an agent for Egypt, the Reported by the Associated Press.
Menendez is a Democrat from New Jersey and is famous for taking crypto shots. He once called Bitcoin (Btc) a “good choice for criminals” and also opposed El Salvador’s acceptance of BTC.
“You are successful, strong, stand on top of our political system,” district judge Sidney H. Stein told Menendez, according to AP.
“Somewhere along the way, and I don’t know when it is, you have lost your way and working for public goodness has been working for your goodness.” Stein added.
Menendez took a bribe in the form of gold and cash and used his political connections to act as an agent for Egypt, according to the report.
Former senator was convicted of bribe charges last year, as CoinDesk reported.
