Ethereum Average Gas Fees Drop 95% One Year after Dencun upgrading

The average Ethereum gas fee drops 95% in the year following Dencun upgrading, one of the most important improvements of the Ethereum network.

On March 13, 2024, Upgrading Dencun of Ethereum are combined. Upgrading combined Cancun upgrading the implementation layer and the upgrading of the Deneb to the Agreement layer. It also introduced nine Ethereum (EIP) improvement measures.

The main goal is to enhance Ethereum scalability and reduce transaction costs for layer-2 networks. According to In Ycharts data, Ethereum’s average gas fell from 72 GWEI in 2024 to 2.7 GWEI on only March 12, 2025.

Last year, an average cost of changing $ 86 on fees, while non -generated token sales cost $ 145 in gas fees. At the time of writing, Ethercan data showed that an average replacement would cost $ 0.39, while an NFT sale was average of $ 0.65.

In a statement sent to Cointelegraph, Dominik Harz, co-founder of the hybrid layer-2 build in Bitcoin (BOB), Ethereum said “underperformed” recently:

“Monday’s price collapse has removed all of Defi TVL’s acquisitions from Trump’s election. Between Solana’s Memecoin Frenzy and fractured for a few months, it is clear that the industry is looking for a new, more sustainable and safe border for the defi.”

The upcoming PECTRA upgrade see the hiccups

On March 5, Ethereum’s next major upgrade, Pectra, roll over the final testnetSepolia. However, the team began to see error messages and empty blocks mined.

Ethereum developer Marius Van der Wijden confirmed that an arrangement was to be deployed, but an unknown user has been able to compromise the same error, leading to further issues. The development group has managed to stabilize testnet and the transactions are successfully processing.

Harz said that while these testnet issues “interfere with the launch of Mainnet,” they are far from Ethereum’s biggest problems. The Executive said that once the PECTRA survived, the data space for layer-2s doubles, reduce costs and increase implementation capacity.

“While that is a step in the right direction, the fact is that Ethereum is rapidly losing its position because the go-to chain for the builders, and Pectra is not the solution-all solutions to its deeper issues,” Harz said.
