EU Chat Control Plan gets support, threatens to beenpted

A controversial European Union’s controversial proposal called “Chat Control” has once again gained momentum, with 19 of the 27 EU member states reported to support the proposal.

The plan is to order the messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram, to scan every message, photo and video sent by users starting in October, even though end-to-end encryption is in place, famous French tech blogger Korben write on Monday.

Denmark The proposal was re -displayed on July 1the first day of the presidency of the EU council. France, who once opposed, is now in favor, Korben said, citing Patrick Breyer, a former member of the European Parliament for Germany and the European Pirate Party.

Belgium, Hungary, Sweden, Italy and Spain are also in favor, while Germany remains unspecified. However, if Berlin joined the majority, a qualified council vote could push the plan through mid -October, Korben claimed.

A qualified most of the EU council is achieved when two conditions meet. First, at least 55 percent of member states, which means 15 to 27, must vote in favor. Second, those countries should represent at least 65% of the total EU population.

Pre-encryption scan on devices

Instead of weakening the encryption, the plan aims to implement client scanning, which means software is embedded in users’ devices investigating the content before it is encrypted. “As if the post office came to read all your letters in your living room before you put it in the envelope,” Korben said.

He added that the true target is not criminals, who use -up -to -date or decentralized channels, but ordinary users whose private communication is now open to algorithmic investigation.

The proposal cites the abstinence of child abuse (CSAM) as a reason. However, this will result in “mass monitoring through fully automatically monitoring real-time messaging and chat and finishing the privacy of digital letter,” Breer write.

Beyond the scanning, the package includes the order verification of the age, effectively removing anonymous from the messaging platforms. Digital freedom groups demand to contact their MEPs, to sign petition and push again before the law becomes irreversible.
