Hedera Africa Hackathon launches with a $ 1m prize pool and web3 focus


The Hashgraph Association and the Exponential Science Foundation have launched Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025, a global event designed to speed up the web3 and artificial intelligence adoption throughout the African continent.

With a prize pool of $ 1 million, the hackathon will run from August 1 to Sept. 30 and aims to attract more than 10,000 participants across 15 African countries, according to a press release shared with Cointelegraph.

The two nonprofit organizations-the Switzerland based on the Hashgraph Association and the Tech Research-Focus Exponential Science Foundation-the event is open to developers, students, and businessmen around the world.

“We aim to use technologies that connect the web3 to AI to create clear cognitive solutions that optimize processes and facilitate decision making and automatically implement,” said Kamal YouSsefi, president of the board of directors in the Hashgraph Association.

All solutions will be built on the Hedera Network throughout the four tracks: Onchain Finance and real-world assets (RWA) tokenisation; ESG maintenance and monitoring; Self identity (SSI) and AI; and playing, metaverse and non-fungible token (NFT).

Up to 15 remaining teams will receive prizes based on change, impact and alignment with hackathon goals.

This hackathon covers large areas of Africa, with site events in more than 20 African cities such as Lagos, Cairo, Nairobi, Kinshasa, Cape Town, Casablanca and Tunis.

Africa’s web3 potential is growing, with more than 50 partners and 100 universities and tech hubs joining the hedera Africa hackathon.

Due to high inflation, a weak banking system and widespread corruption, many people in Africa are lacking access to reliable financial services. This creates opportunities for Web3 projects such as Jambo and Yellow Card to offer successors for saving and achieving.

Kamal featured Africa’s strength in “young population with ambitious tech talents”. “Africa brings a unique advantage to the web3: a demographic edge and a proven capacity for digital adoption,” said Paolo Tasca, executive chairman of the Exponential Science Foundation. “But the obstacles remain, especially in foundational infrastructure and education.”
