Reddit co-founder trying to buy Tiktok and bring it ‘to chain’


Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian confirmed that he joined the Liberty Project Bid to get Tiktok’s US operation with the aim of bringing the platform to a blockchain.

Ohanian’s involvement is first reported By Reuters on March 3, with project Liberty founder Frank McCourt announced by Ohanian will join as a strategic advisor who specializes on social media.

“I’m officially now one of the people who are trying to buy Tiktok – and take it to Onchain,” Ohanian confirmed on a March 3 x x Post.

“Users must own their data. The creators should be owned by their audience. Time,” he added.

McCourt establishes Project Liberty and builds a consortium to buy Tiktok US operations and “rearchitect the platform to put people in control of their digital identities and data.”

The proposal centered on the use of “frequency,” a decentralized social network protocol that provides the ownership of users of their personal data and uses polkadot infrastructure.

“Tiktok has become a game changing for creators, and the future must be built on them,” Ohanian told X.

“Frequency will empower these principles to be reality. And with transparency and responsibility to the core, this new Tiktok will not only be fair – it will be bigger.”

Ohanian is not a stranger to blockchain tech. Since 2022, his platform, Reddit, has invested excess cash reserves in Bitcoin (Btc), Ether (Eth) and Poligon (Pol), although it sells most of them in the third quarter of 2024.
