Sam Altman’s blockchain project has caused controversy over the past due to its use Iris scanning technology To create digital identities. But World Foundation Counsel Liam Horne said the controversy around that technology, known as Orbs, is often misunderstood.
This is “really complete opposite,” of the critics of the world or Altman who owns that data, Thorne said on Wednesday in a panel in Consensus 2025. “The data literally does not leave the ORB.”
The World Network uses its orbs-chrome, bowling ball devices-to perform iris scans that prove an individual’s unique identity as part of a system called “proof-of-personhood.” When a user looks at an ORB, the device maps their iris and immediately converts the biometric to an address that is maintained by privacy known as a World ID, proving that a user is a real, unique person, rather than a bot.
The project is faced with investigations into many constituents, including regulators in Europe, Africa and Asia concerning about Data privacy and permission. But Horne reiterated that the system was designed to be privacy-care from the ground up.
Before, orbs is only available At selected locations in South America, Asia, and Africa, but earlier this month the team in the back of the world shared that they were expanding to the United States, and bringing orbs to six different cities including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Francisco.
