Xai faces legal threat to memphis data pollution

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm Xai faces legal air pollution action from the turbines fired by gas that it uses to handle the Memphis Computer Farm.

Musk firm Xai received 60 days Notice of the intent to sue for violations of the Clean Air Act on Tuesday from the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) to his “Colosus” AI DataCenter in Memphis, Tennessee.

The potential lawsuit, on behalf of the oldest civil rights group in America, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, centers on twelve -in -the -class gas turbines that are installed by the firm to handle the facility rather than wait for a Grid connection.

According to SELC, these turbins operate without proper air quality permits and release harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde, which violates the Clean Air Act.

“Last year, Xai installed and operated at least 35 combustion turbs and other sources of air pollution at the Site of Colosus without getting the necessary preservation or operation of air permits,” read the notice.

Formal requests ignored

The notice also announced that Xai failed to implement the “best available control technology,” such as selective catalytic cuts to limit leaks, another clean air act requirement for major resources.

“We have four different occasions that have sent formal requests to the local health department asking them to use their authority to enforce the law,” Selc Senior Attorney Patrick Anderson said Newsweek, adding, “Obviously, it hasn’t happened yet.”

The Colosus Datacenter is located in a former electronic manufacturing facility in South Memphis near a predominantly black community called Boxtown, where air quality in the area has been reduced by other industrial leaks.

The civil rights organization is seeking injective relief, civil penalties, fees, and trial costs.

Cointelegraph contacted Xai and the NAACP for further comments but did not receive an immediate response.

Data Center Demand Surging

Musk’s xai is building The second, larger facility called Colosus 2 in Memphis, which requires at least 1 Gawinatt of power.

Data Center demand is rising rapidly, driven largely by growing cloud computing and AI, with the US Department of Energy Projecting that it can double or triple by 2028.

Coming reported in May.

“AI’s recording recording is to find the supply limits of data and electric centers as AI companies struggle to reach revenue amidst mounting costs. Institutions are estimated that AI will bring a 165% increase in demand for data centers by 2030,” Nick Ruck, director of the LVRG Research, said cointelegraph.
